The first question most parents ask about a wooden playpen is how big it should be. The honest answer depends on two things: the floor you can give up, and how many little ones will be inside.
The two sizes
The 8-panel playpen sets up as a 63 x 63 inch square, and its matching play mat is 61 x 61 inches. The 10-panel sets up as a 95 x 63 inch rectangle, and its matching play mat is 91 x 61 inches.
Both use the same natural pine panels, the same built-in activity toys and the same walk-through door. The difference is floor space.
Measure first
Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape before you order. Add a little clearance on every side so you can walk past without squeezing, and so the pen is not pressed against a sofa, bookshelf or window cord. Living with the tape outline for a day tells you more than any spec sheet.
When the 8-panel is enough
For one baby who is rolling, sitting and starting to crawl, the 8-panel square gives a clear play area without taking over the room. It is also easier to fit into an apartment living room or a corner of the nursery.
When to go with the 10-panel
- Twins, or siblings close in age who will share the space.
- A toddler who is cruising along the panels and wants room to move.
- An open-plan room where a longer rectangle fits naturally along a wall.
You can change your mind later
The panels connect with tool-free pop-button connectors, so the shape is flexible. You can set the 10-panel up as a smaller layout, or add an expansion set to an 8-panel later. If you plan to add a mat, buy the one made for your pen size so it covers the floor corner to corner without trimming.
