This is the finish people picture when they say wainscoting: a crisp white lower wall, a defined molding line, colour or wallpaper above it. The difference is the face — vertical slats instead of flat raised panels, so you get shadow and texture in daylight rather than a flat painted surface. It also means the wall helps reduce echo and absorb unwanted noise, which flat wainscoting does not.
